FLASHING THE UPRIGHT GRIN

Hi again people, sorry about the delay in bringing you this post, i've been a bit under the weather this week, so everything's taken twice as long as i'd have liked it to.
Still feeling a bit cruddy, so i'll get this little lot up and return to my recuperation.
Blasting out their own brand of seriously heavy, blues-inflected rock and roll, (or "Blues Metal" as it's been christened by the band), PIG IRON burst onto the Metal scene in 2002, kicked in some teeth and took no prisoners with their live performances. Although from London, they stomp as if they just crawled out of a Mississippi swamp after a steady diet of AC/DC and METALLICA. Their debut disc, "The Law & The Road Are One", blew everyone away, a self financed five song effort recorded in 2005 for a mere £160 (!). Since then they've played with the likes of IRON MAIDEN, BUDGIE, LEAFHOUND, ORANGE GOBLIN and ZODIAC MINDWARP, and released their full length debut album "The Paths Of Glory Lead But To The Grave", in late 2007. Not bad for a group who started out as a covers band playing MC5, SKYNYRD and MOTORHEAD songs. Hear for yourself now what the fuss is about, this is their debut Mini album, "The Law & The Road Are One", now bolstered by six (yes, six!), bonus tracks. Hot, blue & righteous.

Some obscure U.S. Metal for ya next. Matakopas were a Heavy/Power Metal quartet, formed in Rome, New York in 1985. Their only release was the full length 1987 "Coming Out Ahead" LP, released by World Records. Because of it's rarity it has become a sought after item in Metal collectors circles. A bootleg cd release on Revenge Of True Metal Records has circulated in recent years, but this seems only to have driven up demand for original vinyl copies.

Two NWOBHM artifacts conclude tonight's post, both from the Rondelet Records label. Firstly, BROOKLYN, despite their name, were a long forgotten Leicester based melodic NWOBHM band formed in 1980 by the Willson brothers, Danny & Rick. Both fine guitarists, Danny also handled vocals for the four piece band, with Barry Coughlin on bass and drummer Gordon Taylor completing the line up. Signed by Rondelet Records, home to HERITAGE, GASKIN & WITCHFYNDE, they debuted in 1981 with the "I Wanna Be A Detective" 7" single. A further 45, "Hollywood", preceded the release of their full length album, "You Never Know What You'll Find". A ten song collection of melodic Hard Rockery, it was distinguished by some exemplary THIN LIZZY like twin lead harmonies and very catchy choruses. This was to be the end of the band's recording career however, and for whatever reason, Brooklyn went their separate ways.
Despite being on the collectable Rondelet label, this record doesn't appear to be on too many wants lists despite it's scarcity. Puzzling as it's a nice period piece and far better than a lot of records with high price tags. Post Brooklyn, Rick Willson formed "epic guitar pop" band DIESEL PARK WEST in 1983. To date the band have released ten albums and still record and tour regularly. Danny Willson spent some time in rock'n'roll revival band SHOWADDYWADDY, before joining Martin Turner's WISHBONE ASH this year, making his debut with them on the "Argus : Through The Looking Glass" album.

Finally tonight, this is one which was requested a few weeks back, and a nice one at that HERITAGE were a cultured NWoBHM band formed in London in 1980. The band signed with Rondelet Records and debuted in 1981 with the "Strange Place To Be" 7", which was followed by the band's lone album, "Remorse Code", in 1982. Despite good reviews and gigs with the likes of DEF LEPPARD and MAGNUM, personnel problems forced the band to split soon after the album's release. In 1985 the Johnson brothers teamed up with ex-MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP vocalist Gary Barden to form an early incarnation of STATETROOPER. Paul 'Fasker' Johnson later joined up with SAXON playing on their "Rock The Nations" and "Destiny" albums, and would eventually be reunited with his brother Steve in USI. In later years "Fasker" would contribute to the 2001 solo album by former SAXON guitarist GRAHAM OLIVER, "End Of An Era".

Nice post this one; Heritage were, imo, one of the best bands of the nwobhm. When I got the album, back in the 80's, I was totally impressed (I couldn't get the tune "Strange place to be" outta my head).
Man, I'm really old!! lol

Thanks for posting the Heritage album. I bought the album back when it came out and was a bit disappointed with it and sold it off. (I was going through my faster, louder stage). I stumbled across a few tracks on the end of a cassette some time back, man what was I thinking! I'm looking forward to revisiting the entire album. Thanks.
Also I have a link for you. Where to send it?

On the Heritage album, I noticed that there are some errors on "Change Your Mood" (track 8), could you re-up that song?

Matakapos has some nice hooks and arrangements for the era. Very listenable production also, for what was probably a very do-it-yourself release.

Brooklyn sounds like they should have skinny ties and polyester trousers. It's not totally awful, but certainly not the nwobhm sound. They sound like a band from the mod/pop movement of that era, but dangit, I cannot figure out who. Possibly Bram Tchaikovski? The Only Ones? Do tell. It makes me smile to think they were labelmates of Witchfynde.

Heritage! pure nwobhm bliss.

thanks as always for your efforts

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
